Situated along the Port Hacking river, Sandbar by 868 Studio is an ambitious study in structural elasticity. Tasked with updating a heavy double-brick and concrete dwelling, the design team embraced rigorous engineering gymnastics. By stretching the existing load-bearing framework to its absolute limits, the project boldly transforms a once-introverted fortress into a highly permeable, view-swept coastal pavilion.

The architectural envelope is redefined by the introduction of monumental glazing. These sheer expanses effectively dematerialize the building’s perimeter, inviting an uninterrupted, 180-degree maritime theatre directly into the floorplate. This supreme transparency liberates the internal volumes, allowing the residence to breathe and visually expand toward the horizon line without traditional masonry constraints.

Amidst this pursuit of modernist clarity, the site’s history is poetically preserved. The original marble staircase remains as an anchoring sculptural artifact, its classical veins offering a striking counterpoint to the crisp new interventions. 868 Studio elevated this transitional zone by introducing a precise circular skylight overhead, bathing the heritage stone in celestial illumination and crafting an award-worthy dialogue between antiquity and boundless light.
